Minor matters: Allen promoted to Durham
UPDATE, 4:05: The Rays have announced the full minor-league staffs, with no other changes. The team release is below:
DEVELOPING: Word of the Rays minor-league staffs is starting to trickle out, with the most significant change the promotion of Neil Allen to Triple-A pitching coach.
As reported previously, Allen, who spent last season at Class A Charlotte, replaces Xavier Hernandez, who resigned to go back to college coaching near his Houston home. Allen will join the Durham staff of manager Charlie Montoyo, who returns for his fifth season, and hitting coach Dave Myers, his third.
The Class A Charlotte staff has one change, as Steve Watson, who had been in the Marlins organization, was hired to replace Allen. Jim Morrison is returning as manager and Joe Szekely as hitting coach. Watson is a graduate of Florida Southern and previously coached in the Orioles and Reds organizations.
The Double A Montgomery staff will return intact, with Billy Gardner Jr. back for his fifth season, joined by hitting coach Ozzie Timmons (third season) and pitching coach Bill Moloney (second).
The Class A Bowling Green staff also will return intact, with Brady Williams the manager, RC Lichtenstein the pitching coach and Manny Castillo the coach.
Allen, who pitched 11 seasons in the majors, spent last season with Charlotte, where his staff led the league with a 3.06 ERA, after the previous three at Double-A Montgomery. He had previously coached in the Yankees and Blue Jay organizations as well.
Montoyo is 325-249 in four seasons with Durham, winning four division titles plus a Governors' Cup and a Triple-A national championship.
