Niemann placed on DL with shoulder strain; Mike Ekstrom recalled
Right-hander Jeff Niemann has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain, and reliever Mike Ekstrom has been recalled.
Though there hasn't been a formal announcement from the team, there's a good chance you'll see RHP Wade Davis also placed on the DL, with Jeremy Hellickson starting Tuesday against the Tigers.
Ekstrom is scheduled to arrive at around 9 p.m.
Manager Joe Maddon had said pre-game there's a chance that both Niemann and Davis could land on the DL with shoulder strains. They had been sent back to St. Petersburg to undergo MRIs Monday after experiencing soreness on the back of their throwing shoulders.
Maddon said he expected any DL stays would be minimal and precautionary. RHP Andy Sonnanstine would likely start Saturday in Niemann's place.
