Rays scratch Jeff Niemann from Sunday start due to shoulder soreness, will use Andy Sonnanstine, who is reinstated from the DL. Dale Thayer goes back to Durham.

Niemann said he was "a little bit more sore than usual" in the back of his shoulder following last start, has been making improvement every day but Rays don't want to risk setback.

He's hoping to pitch next Saturday, but not sure yet. May fly back to see Dr. Koco Eaton.

Manager Joe Maddon said he expects Niemann to miss only one start.
