Niemann set to start Saturday
Jeff Niemann said he is good to go for Saturday's start in New York after throwing a 40-50 bullpen session at the Trop during today's workout.
"We're good,'' Niemann said.
Niemann left Sunday's start after five innings due to back tightness. He received soft-tissue treatment twice during the break while at home in Houston and said he felt no residual issues while throwing all of his pitches on Thursday.
"Everything felt good,'' Niemann said. "Very encouraging.''
The Rays were headed to New York after the workout, opening the post-break portion of their schedule with a three-game series at Yankee Stadium starting on Friday night, with James Shields facing CC Sabathia.
All players were at workout except five with permission to meet the team in New York, All-Stars Carl Crawford, Evan Longoria, David Price and Rafael Soriano, plus reliever Joaquin Benoit, who went home to the Dominican Republic; and INF Sean Rodriguez, who had a flooding incident at his rented Redington Beach condo.
