No deal, Upton stays with Rays, as expected
UPDATE, 6:33: Here are Upton's comments about not being traded today:
(Happy to still be here?) I've always been happy to be here. I've told you guys that from the start. And that's pretty much all I've got.
(Checking your phone today around 1:30?) I wasn't even worried about it, that wasn't even something that I was even thinking about.
(But still ...) "It's over with, I'm hyappy it's over with. Just go on and finish the last month and play baseball.
(Would you have been disappointed to leave with team in race?) Definitely, because I think this last month is going to be a lot of fun. It's been fun all year, but we're very much in this race right now and I want to be a part of it.
(Something could still happen during winter?) The off-season will be the off-season and if I happen to get a call, then so be it. Right now I'm planning on finishing this last month and I'm going to approach the off-season like I'm coming back to Tampa.
(And if it was up to you, you'd be back?) Definitely, I'd love to stay. We'll see what happens.
(What do you think will happen?) I don't know, no idea.
UPDATE, 6:15: Upton said he was happy to have the latest deadline behind him - though he wasn't that concerned - and looked forward to what he expects to be an interesting final month of the season, and also that he would "love" to stay with the Rays in 2012 and beyond.
DEVELOPING: As expected, CF B.J. Upton remained with the Rays on Monday as the window closed to make a trade with the still unknown team that claimed him on waivers. There has been speculation that it was the Nationals or Indians. The Rays did not seem likely to make a deal now given they talked to several teams at the July 31 deadline and can talk to all teams during the off-season.
