Now official: OF Guyer called up, Niemann on DL

UPDATE, 11:43: Rays make it official -  Guyer called up to make major-league debut, Niemann on 15-day DL with a lower back strain. Guyer is already in Baltimore.

DEVELOPING: OF Brandon Guyer is being called up has been called up to take RHP Jeff Niemann's roster spot, though the Rays won't make an official announcement until this afternoon.

Guyer, who was acquired from the Cubs in the Matt Garza trade, was informed after Thursday's game, according to the Durham Herald-Sun. He is hitting .356 with 6 homers and 18 RBIs and has a .412 on-base percentage.

By calling up Guyer, the Rays add some depth as CF B.J. Upton is likely facing a suspension for his Wednesday ejection. Plus, LF Sam Fuld has been in an extended skid (2-for-35), his average down to .261, from .350.

“Everyone who plays this game, that is the ultimate dream,” Guyer told the Herald-Sun. “I can’t really explain it. I’m just really excited right now. I’ll try to make the most of the opportunity and we’ll see what happens.”

Guyer would seem likely to have a short stay, as the Rays will at some point move RHP Andy Sonnanstine into Niemann's spot in the rotation and add a reliever. Niemann was to pitch Tuesday, but with an off-day on Monday they could move the other starters up and wait as late as May 14 before needing a 5th starter.

Niemann will be placed on the DL with a lower back strain.
