UPDATE, 7:34: Manager Joe Maddon is plenty familiar with Benoit, having seen him often when he was a coach with the Angels. "He is very interesting. Believe me I saw way too much of him in the West. He was very good,'' Maddon told Andy Freed and Dave Wills on the Hot Stove radio show on 620-AM. "I'm really excited about him being with us.''

Maddon spoke highly of Benoit's effectiveness against left-handers, and also how he has a pitch that seems to drop off the table.

UPDATE, 6:27: Benoit gets $750,000 if he's in the big leagues, with a chance for another $500,000 in performance bonuses.

DEVELOPING: The Rays added another pitcher to their spring roster, signing RHP Joaquin Benoit to a minor-league deal with an invite to major-league camp.

Benoit, 32, missed the 2009 season recovering from January rotator cuff surgery but is considered healthy and should be ready to go.

He pitched parts of eight seasons for the Rangers, and was dominant in 2007, posting a 2.85 ERA in 70 games, striking out 87 in 82 innings. His career record is 30-26 with 8 saves and a 4.79 ERA.

With Benoit, the Rays will open camp this week with 57 players.
