Pena taking swings, feeling "great"
1B Carlos Pena has already started taking batting practice and said the two broken fingers that ended his 2009 season are not a concern.
"I feel great,'' Pena told Times columnist Gary Shelton today. "I'm very happy with that. My hand is pain-free - no discomfort at all.''
Pena's left index and middle fingers were broken by a CC Sabathia pitch on Sept. 7, and he underwent surgery on Sept. 10 to have pins inserted, with the expectation he'd be fully recovered before the start of spring training, and that appears to be the case.
Pena returned this week from the Dominican Republic, where he took BP with no problems. "I swung the bat a lot, and I would say, "Wow this feels great,' '' Pena said. "Even when I mis-hit one on the end of the bat, the vibrations felt fine. I'm going to keep swinging it. Right now it feels perfect. It's fun to play baseball.''
