Pitching plans getting clearer
The Rays aren't ready to announce their plans for the postseason pitching rotation just yet.
But by them moving RHP Wade Davis' final regular season start back from Saturday to Sunday, here is what we can figure:
David Price is all but officially announced as the starter for Wednesday's opener.
For Game 2 on Thursday, Davis is out now cause he'd have only three days rest, so that would leave Matt Garza, who was sharp Thursday, or James Shields, who starts Friday.
Davis would be on five days' rest now for Game 3 on Oct. 9, or Shields would be on seven. The other seems likely to work Game 4 on Oct. 10.
Also a product of the change, Price is now a possibility to pitch a couple innings, or maybe even start, on Saturday in Kansas City. Whether it would be enough to get him a 20th win, and increase his chances for the Cy Young Award, remains to be seen.
Manager Joe Maddon wasn't willing to say much. “There’s a whole bunch of different subplots involved honestly, and if I go there then I’m going to start revealing things I don’t want to reveal right now,” he said.
