Price hit by broken bat, leaves game, has cut on right hand

3:44: Just talked to several of the players who were on the field when Price was hit and they all were scared and feared the worst. "I looked up and saw he was down and I thought, Oh no," '' B.J. Upton said.

2:32: Price said it was "more of a scare than anything else" and he "should be fine" and expects to make his next start. "I don't really remember what happened to be honest,'' Price said. "It could have been a lot worse.''

2:06: Rays say Price has an abrasion on his right hand near the base of his thumb. He was bleeding but it does not appear he will need stitches. He had a precautionary X-ray that was negative.

DEVELOPING: Rays LHP David Price had to leave today's game after being hit on the right hand by a broken bat.

Price left the game with his right hand wrapped in a towel and escorted by assistant trainer Paul Harker. It was not clear if he was bleeding.

Price was hit in the second inning Adrian Beltre's bat splintered. The previous batter, Kevin Youkilis, had lined a ball just by Price. Beltre hit a small roller up the middle as hit bat hit Price, who went down briefly on his knees. He got up and then went back down on his knees when manager Joe Maddon and Harker arrived.

Joe Bateman is in to relieve him.
