Price piles up strikeouts: team record 14 in 7 innings

UPDATE, 4:26: The Rays won 12-0 and moved within 6 games of wild-card leading Yankees, closest they've been since July 21.

UPDATE, 3:42: LHP David Price gave his mother quite a birthday present on Sunday, striking a Rays team-record 14 batters in seven innings of work against the Blue Jays. Price recorded his first seven outs (while allowing a walk and a single) by strikeout and had at least two in each of the first five innings. The 14 strikeouts also match the highest for an AL pitcher this season, also by New York's CC Sabathia and Detroit's Justin Verlander . (Bad info in the post-game notes there; Jered Weaver has a 15K game.)  With Price throwing 111 pitches, Brandon Gomes took over for the eighth with the Rays leading 6-0.

UPDATE, 3:36: And Price gets Jose Molina swinging and now owns the team record with 14Ks and that's through 7 innings.

UPDATE, 3:22: Price opens the seventh with his 13th strikeout, tying the team record.

UPDATE, 3:05: Price got three outs in the 6th but no strikeouts.

DEVELOPING: Rays LHP David Price has quite a fan club today in Toronto, tying his career high with 12 strikeouts through the first five innings.

Ths Rays team record - for the moment - is 13, shared by Scott Kazmir and James Shields.
