Price is right for Rays
The Rays have been following Price closely all season - with scouts at all 18 of his games - and see drafting him as the opportunity to add another high-end advanced pitching prospect to their system. "He has everything that we're looking for in a frontline major-league starter," scouting director R.J. Harrison said last week.
The Rays had also been considering Georgia Tech catcher Matt Wieters and California prep third baseman Josh Vitters, whom Baseball America now projects to go second to the Royals. Wieters, according to Baseball America, will drop to the Giants at the No. 10 spot. (For the BA projected first round, see http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/features/264204.html.
The draft - which will be televised for the first time by ESPN2 - starts at 2 p.m. with the first pick scheduled for around 2:15. The Rays don't pick again until 65th, due to the high number of free-agent compensation picks added after the first round, and then again 95th. The first five rounds will be completed Thursday, the remaining rounds - up to 50 - will be completed on Friday.
Check back later Thursday for more coverage.
