Price: We all need to step up without Shields, Davis

David Price won 20 games and the American League Cy Young Award, but after seeing the Rays trade James Shields and Wade Davis, he said he and the remaining pitchers will have to do more.

"Everybody, including myself, needs to step up and pitch better this year,'' Price said Tuesday. "That's our plan right now. That's what we're working out (in the off-season) for. ... Everyone's going to step up.''

Price said he considered Shields a role model, not just for himself but all players in baseball, and that in the minors Davis was a better pitcher than he was. And Price said as the senior member of the rotation he will provide whatever leadership the others want or need.

As for the reality of the trade?

"It's part of the business,'' Price said. "That's what goes on. Nobody can stay with the same team forever. It's tough. They definitely will be missed. But I'm looking forward to meeting these new guys.''
