Prospect Alex Torres fans 9 straight, 11 total in Venezuelan game
Rays prospect LHP Alex Torres had a tremendous game on Tuesday for Aguilas del Zulia in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Torres struck out 11 batters in five innings, including his final nine. According to Venezuelan journalist Augusto Cárdenas, who writes a baseball blog (in Spanish), Torres is one shy of the league record for consecutive strikeouts, and will have a chance to tie or break it in his next start on Sunday.
Torres is 2-0 and has pitched in four games without allowing an earned run, and has 25 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings, but his time is short. According to Cardenas, Torres is on a strict limit by the Rays - no more than five innings or 75 pitches per game, and a total of 30 innings.
Torres, 22, was 11-6 with a 3.27 ERA for Double-A Montgomery this season and was recently ranked the Rays sixth-best prospect by Baseball America. He was acquired from the Angels in the Scott Kazmir trade.
