Rays acquire INF Ryan Roberts from Diamondbacks
The Rays acquired INF Ryan Roberts from the Diamondbacks Tuesday night, giving them a potential fill-in for injured 3B Evan Longoria until he’s ready to resume full-time duties at third base.
Roberts will join the Rays Wednesday in Baltimore. Tampa Bay will have to make a corresponding move to make room, with the possibility of optioning INF Brooks Conrad.
Roberts, 31, designated for assignment by Arizona, came to Tampa Bay for Double-A 2B Tyler Bortnick. Roberts, a right-handed hitter who has played parts of six-big league seasons, was batting .250 with six homers and 34 RBI this season, while playing second and third for the Diamondbacks. He racked up 19 homers and 65 RBI last year.
Longoria, out since May 1 with a partially torn left hamstring, is getting closer to going on a rehab assignment. But it appears the Rays may ease him back into the lineup as DH first before he resumes full-time third baseman duties.
Bortnick, 25, is hitting .253 with four homers and 48 RBI in his first season in Double-A.
