DEVELOPING: The Rays and CF B.J. Upton avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a one-year contract.
Terms were not yet available. Upton made $3-million last year after going to a hearing and losing in his first season of arbitration eligibility. He hit .237 with 18 homers, 62 RBIs and 42 steals. The only other Ray eligible for arbitration is RHP Andy Sonnanstine, and his case is also expected to be settled by Tuesday's exchange of figures. Under Rays policy, they break off talks on one-year deals at that point and proceed to a hearing.Sonnanstine is arbitration eligible for the first time after making $416,900 last season.
