Rays call up Dan Johnson, send down Hellickson
After Monday's game, the Rays called up INF/OF Dan Johnson and optioned debut-winning RHP Jeremy Hellickson back to Triple A.
Hellickson was going back after the one start no matter how well he did, manager Joe Maddon said - even if he threw a no-hitter. The Rays wanted him to make the one start so the five regulars in their rotation would get an extra day's rest, and so Hellickson would have a taste of the majors for when he is needed later in the season.
Johnson will provide depth and a boost to the offense. He was hitting .303 with 30 homers and 95 RBIs at Triple-A Durham, and will help fill in at first until Carlos Pena recovers from his right foot injury. Johnson can also play third, the outfield and DH. He is the player who hit the dramatic home run in 2008 at Boston.
