Rays grant Matsui his release
The Rays granted OF/DH Hideki Matsui his release on Wednesday, allowing the former star to sign with another team if the opportunity presents itself.
Matsui, 38, did not do well with the ample opportunity the Rays provided, hitting .147 with 2 homers and 7 RBIs in 95 at-bats (103 plate appearances) in 34 games.
Rays manager Joe Maddon said he feels Matusi can play more but that his hitting mechanics seemed to be off.
The Rays designated Matsui for assignment on July 25, and had 10 days to trade, release or pass him through waivers. There was some talk about him going back to Triple-A Durham if no other opportunities were available.
