The Rays lost on the last pitch for a second straight day, as the Orioles complete a three-game sweep with a 3-2 walkoff win in 14 innings.

O's rookie Manny Machado singled in the winning run with a liner to left off Chris Archer that Matt Joyce dove for but couldn't grab, scoring Adam Jones. The rally started with a two-out walk to Jones, and then a single by Endy Chavez.

The Rays and rookie Chris Archer navigated quite a mess in the 13th.

Endy Chavez opened with a walk, Manny Machado followed with a bunt, and Archer was too soft with his toss to first, the ball bouncing away from 2B Elliot Johnson, who was covering. Mark Reynolds followed with a blooper over Johnson's head to load the bases. The Rays went to a 5-man infield to get one out then

The loss dropped the Rays to 77-66 and four games behind the O's in the AL East and wild-card races.

The Rays went into Thursday's matinee finale trying to avoid a sweep and, at least according to some player, absolutely needing to win.

They took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and RHP Jeremy Hellickson did well carrying it into the sixth. The Orioles went ahead with a two-run rally off Wade Davis in the seventh, reserve C Taylor Teagarden doubling in two runs with his sixth hit of the season. The Rays came back and tied it in the eighth as Desmond Jennings, back in the lineup after missing four gaems with a stiff back, walked, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a 30-foot squibber by Ben Zobrist.

The Rays lost 2B Ryan Roberts, who fouled a ball off his foot in the 11th, and was replaced by RHP Chris Archer, who struck out to finish the two-out at-bat, then took over on the mound.

The Rays now go on to New York, where they open a three-game weekend series with the Yankees on Friday night, with David Price returning to the mound against CC Sabathia.
