Rays lose 5-3 to Tigers
The Rays lost 5-3 to the Tigers Sunday in front of 21,874 at Tropicana Field, their sixth loss in their last seven games.
Righthander Alex Cobb battled through his start, getting himself into bases-loaded, no outs spots in the fourth and fifth inning. He was charged with five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
The Rays (41-38), held hitless by Tigers lefty Drew Smyly through four innings, battled back to tie the game in the fifth. Hideki Matsui, who had his first multi-hit game since June 14, hit an RBI single to score Ben Zobrist. And Matsui scored from first on a Jose Molina double, tying the game at 3-3.
But Cobb gave up a leadoff double to Don Kelly in the sixth. Kelly advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Austin Jackson.
The Rays, which entered Sunday 6 1/2 games back of the first-place Yankees, will host New York for a three-game series at the Trop starting Monday.
About the only good news for Tampa Bay Sunday was that LHP David Price and RHP Fernando Rodney were selected to the American League All-Star game.
