Rays lose 8-0 to Red Sox
The Rays lost 8-0 to the Red Sox, and got only three hits in doing so.
It was the third time they were shutout this spring, matching the 2003 franchise record.
The 8-0 loss matched their worst in franchise history, also to the Red Sox in March 2001.
Reliever Brandon Gomes had a tough outing, walking four and allowing a single while getting only two outs (on a double play.) Manager Joe Maddon said he felt Gomes, coming off back surgery, was close but not quite back to form. Gomes felt similarly: "I'm confident I'm still very close to where I need to be.''
The Rays are close to deciding between Gomes and Burke Badenhop for their final bullpen spot. Badenhop had another solid outing Tuesday.
