Rays set noon Tuesday press conference for Damon, Ramirez
The Rays are planning a noon press conference for Tuesday, and new acquisitions Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez will be there.
So too will manager Joe Maddon, executive VP Andrew Friedman and team president Matt Silverman. And expect to see Scott Boras, the high-powered agent for both.
The Rays agreed to terms with the veteran hitters on Jan. 21, but have not announced or commented on the deals because they were not official until the players passed physicals and completed paperwork. Ramirez arrived in the Tampa Bay area on Sunday night from Phoenix; Damon has just a short trip from his Orlando area home.
With an announcement now set, that indicates the 1-year deals are complete, Damon reportedly getting $5.25-million and Ramirez $2-million.
The Rays will have to clear two spots on the 40-man roster to make room. Potential candidates to go, either by trade or assignment to the minors via waivers, include 1B/OF Leslie Anderson, just-claimed RHP Rob Delaney or Mike Ekstrom, C Jose Lobaton and/or out-of-options OFs Sam Fuld or Justin Ruggiano.
