Rays sign INF Hank Blalock to minor league deal
The Rays have signed INF Hank Blalock to a minor league deal.
Blalock, a two-time All-Star, will be in Port Charlotte Tuesday for a workout. He provides additional depth, and an option if the Rays need another left-handed bat.
Blalock hit .234 with 25 homers and 66 RBIs last season for Texas, where he split time at first base and DH; his on-base percentage, however, was a career-low .277. He missed large portions of the 2007-08 seasons with injuries.
Terms were not disclosed, but SI.com's Jon Heyman reported Blalock will make $925,000 in base salary plus $350,000 in performance incentives based on plate appearances.
