Rays sign reliever Juan Cruz to minor-league deal
The Rays added another candidate to their bullpen competition, signing RHP Juan Cruz to a minor-league deal.
Cruz, 32, has pitched parts of 10 seasons in the majors, with a career 4.15 ERA, mostly in middle relief. He started last season with the Royals but was released in late April after appearing in just five games, posting a 3.38 ERA, and underwent shoulder surgery in mid-May.
Cruz had a solid three-year stint with the Diamondbacks in 2006-08, going 15-7, 3.47 in 141 appearances (including 15 starts in 2006), then signed a two-year, $5.5-million deal with the Royals. He went 3-4, 5.72 in 46 appearances in 2009, then made just the five appearances before being released last season. He has also pitched for the Cubs, Braves and A's.
