Rays swept by Royals, lose 5-4
The Rays lost again Wednesday, the 5-4 defeat making for a clean sweep by the Royals and capping a disappointing 3-6 roadtrip.
Trailing most of the game, the Rays rallied two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth to pull even, but couldn't get ahead. The tie didn't last long, however, as Burke Badenhop gave up what turned out to be the winning run on a homer to Billy Butler in the eighth.
Rookie starter Matt Moore battled the heat - 97 at first pitch, 101 with a heat index of 106 late in the game - to work into the eighth, allowing four runs on 10 hits, including two home runs.
The loss, the Rays' 10th in their last 15 games, dropped them to 40-35 on the season and into a tie with the Red Sox for third place in the AL East.
The Rays return home on Thursday to open a series with the Tigers.
