Rays vs. Red Sox, at the Trop
UPDATE, 6:13: Here is Maddon's explanation of why Upton isn't playing: “Zobrist (1-for-8 vs. Matsuzaka) needs to play tonight, Joyce (1-for-4 with a homer) needs to play tonight, Rodriguez (1-for-3) needs to play tonight, Aybar (2-for-6) needs to play tonight. So it’s just a nice problem that we have. He’s not off-off (meaning he’s available to play later in the game). We have this nice little problem going on right now. The fact that Matt Joyce is up, he presents different possibilities. Willy’s swinging the bat well right now, he’s filled in very nicely in the four-hole so we have a lot of moving parts right now, but I chose to do that tonight.’’
UPDATE, 5:44: Upton said he was surprised and unhappy to not be in the lineup, and was told it was a result of his numbers - 1-for-13, with 4 Ks - vs. Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka. Manager Joe Maddon said it was simply a matter of matchups, and that he felt it was better to keep Ben Zobrist, Matt Joyce, Sean Rodriguez and Willy Aybar in the lineup. He did say Upton was scheduled to play the rest of the week.
UPDATE, 3:46: The Rays lineup has a bit of a surprise, or actually who isn't in it is the surprise as B.J. Upton isn't playing. Zobrist cf, Crawford lf, Longoria 3b, Aybar dh, Joyce rf, Rodriguez 2b, Pena 1b, Bartlett ss, Jaso c, Garza p DEVELOPING:
The Rays and Red Sox are getting ready to open a three-game series at the Trop, with second place in the AL East on the line.
Since it's a day that ends in Y, the Sox are making another roster move, this time putting RHP Clay Buchholz on the DL and calling up LHP Felix Doubront, who will start on Wednesday.
Also, the Rays will observe a moment of silence tonight for Tampa police officers, David Curtis and Jeffrey Kocab, who were killed last week in the line of duty. It is also ALS Awareness Night, with radio broadcaster Andy Freed reciting Lou Gehrig's famous farewell speech.
