Rays at Yankees, w/C.C. at DH
UPDATE, 12:24: Two interesting pre-game scenes today. A) Reggie Jackson going into Joe Maddon's office to talk about his feelings on the passing of George Steinbrenner as Jackson and Maddon go back to the Angels days together when Maddon, as a minor-league coach, threw him batting practice in spring training. B) Rays season-ticket holder and mega-fan Dick Vitale on the field wearing a Yankees cap - but with a nice story behind it, as he was given the hat personally by Steinbrenner, during a game at the Trop, and is wearing it today in tribute.
UPDATE, 12:15: So even though Crawford had Wednesday and Thursday off following the All-Star Game, and that the Rays have Thursday off this week, Maddon said the DH day was simply a matter of wanting to give Crawford some extra rest and not a product of a flare-up in his shoulder. Crawford said he was surprised when told Saturday night, and that while the shoulder was still a "little bit" sore it was "getting better every day.'' Maddon also said that in wanting to play Kapler, Zobrist and Sean Rodriguez, Crawford was the most logical candidate to be the DH.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are looking to make it two straight against the Yankees and close to within a game of first place, but they won't have their best team on the field as Carl Crawford is in the DH slot rather than leftfield, and Gabe Kapler is taking his place. Manager Joe Maddon did that twice last weekend to rest Crawford's left shoulder, which he acknowledged as recently as last Sunday was still "kind of sore."
