Red Sox's Francona on the Manny and Johnny experience

What is it going to be like for the Rays to have Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon on the same team? Well, here’s what one man who knows, Red Sox manager Terry Francona, had to say when asked today:

What will the Manny Experience be like for the Rays?
Francona: “I don’t know, that’s none of my business. I’ve got my hands full managing this team. I don’t need to help Joe.’’

What was the Manny Experience like for you?
Francona: “Well, we won a couple World Series. I would never say something three years removed that I didn’t say three years ago. So again, everybody, you have ups and downs, and sometimes it’s time to move on. But we won with him.’’

What about your recollections of Johnny Damon?
Francona: “One of my all-time favorites. One of the best guys you could ever have play. As a manager, you can’t appreciate him too much. There were days he just got beat (up) and he’d call in the morning and go, “Don’t not play me. Let me have a chance to show up.” He understood his obligation. He’d go out and play centerfield even if he went 0-for-4, he’d lead-off and play. I was as impressed with him. He’s very dear to me. We loved him. I know he went to the Yankees and he got booed when he came (back to Boston), but everybody that’s been around him appreciates what he’s done.’’

Is is nice having him back in the AL East?
Francona: “No, no, no. I wish he’d go somewhere else. That doesn’t mean he’s not dear to us. We love him. I don’t want him to help these guys out too much. Same thing with Manny.’’
