In related news: V-Mart to Tigers, Huff stays in SF

23

November

As we wait for the Rays to announce their decisions on offering arbitration to their own free agents, and the 2 p.m. announcement of the AL MVP award, here are some somewhat Rays-related developments in the baseball world today:

C/1B Victor Martinez has reportedly agreed to leave the Red Sox for the Tigers, who offered him $50-million over four years according to reports out of Venezuela. That could be good for the Rays in taking Martinez out of the Red Sox lineup, but could also give the Sox more impetus, and free up more money, to go after Carl Crawford. The move could also take the Tigers out of the running for Crawford, though not necessarily.

Ex-Ray Aubrey Huff, meanwhile, decided to stay with the Giants, and got a pretty good deal to do so - $22-million over two years, with a 2013 option. Huff, who helped lead the Giants to the World Series title for the bargain price of $3-million, will get $10-million in 2011 and 2012, and either a $2-million buyout or another $10-million for 2013.

And former Rays coach Terry Collins was formally introduced as manager of the Mets today. He got a two-year deal, with a team option for 2013.
