Rocco could return
The Rays say they still don't know what if anything is wrong with CF Rocco Baldelli and still won't say what kind of tests he has undergone, but they also say it's still possible he could play again this season.
"I still believe there's a chance to get him back at least possibly to DH at some point,'' manager Joe Maddon said Monday. "That may be something we can do; we just don't know until we get the results of these tests.''
Baldelli has been out since mid-May, sidelined by a strained left hamstring. He has been close to returning twice when he had to halt his rehab assignment; mostly recently due to what was described as general soreness. The Rays said he underwent a "series of tests" on Aug. 27 and have not said much since.
"All I know is they've done some tests ... and apparently it's taken a while to get the results back,'' Maddon said.
Baldelli has been working out at the minor-league complex and, through a team spokesman, has also declined to discuss the situation.
Also, Akinori Iwamura has yet to hear from MLB officials about his bat that was confiscated over the weekend in New York.
