Rookie Matt Moore to start opener, Shields in Game 2
The Rays named rookie LHP Matt Moore to start Friday's playoff opener, and veteran ace RHP James Shields to start Game 2 on Saturday.
Moore, 22, will be making his second major-league start, and fourth appearance since his Sept. 12 promotion from Triple-A Durham.
Moore hadn't pitched above Class A before this season, then starred at both the Double- and Triple-A level, going a combined 12-3, 1.92 with 210 strikeouts in 155 innings.
Shields will be pitching on full rest Saturday.
The Rays were also considering RHP Wade Davis for the opener, and didn't say when, or if, he would pitch in the series. Jeremy Hellickson and David Price would appear to be lined up for Games 3 and 4 at home.
