Roster additions looming today

20

November

The Rays have a midnight deadline to add players to their 40-man roster to protect them from being taken in the Rule 5 draft at next month's winter meetings.

Players are eligible after their fourth or (if they signed at 18 or younger) fifth pro season.

The Rays roster is at 34 right now, though the official announcement of Joel Peralta's re-signing pushes that to 35.

Among the top minor-league players who are eligible to be taken and likely under consideration to be added:

INF Tim Beckham

Top pick in 2008 draft - yes, ahead of Buster Posey - hit .256-6-28 at Durham while sitting out 50 games for a drug-test violation. Is only 22, and has gotten some time at 2B in addition to natural SS position. Seems likely to make big-league debut this season.

INF Cole Figueroa

Acquired in Jason Bartlett trade with Padres, former UF Gator had impressive season at Durham, hitting .286-2-42 with a .344 OBP and can play 2B and 3B.

INF Hak-Ju Lee

Rays top position prospect, acquired from Cubs in Matt Garza trade, had so-so season at Double-A Montgomery, .261-4-37, with 37 steals, then missed time with injury. Viewed as SS of the future.

LHP Felipe Rivero

Was 8-8, 3.41 in 27 games (21 starts) at Class A Bowling Green. Was chosen for All-Star Futures Game.

LHP Enny Romero

Was 5-7, 3.93 in 25 games (23 starts) for Class A Charlotte. Also chosen for All-Star Futures Game.

A couple others who may be talked about are 1B/OF Leslie Anderson, OF Kyeong Kang, LHP Kyle Lobstein.

The risk isn't usually too high, as players taken in the Rule 5 have to stay in the majors all season with their new team, but there can be some exceptions, as the Rays found out when Josh Hamilton was taken.
