Roster moves: Ruiz released; Ashley, 3 others promoted

The Rays declined their option and released Cuban 1B Jose Ruiz.

Also, they added four players to the 40-man roster, which keeps them from being available to be selected in the Rule 5 draft: C Nevin Ashley, and RHPs Alex Cobb, Dane De La Rosa, Albert Suarez.

Ruiz hit .272 with 1 homer and 11 RBIs in 23 games at Double-A Montgomery, after hitting .447 with one homer and 9 RBIs in 13 games for the Dominican Summer League team after signing with the Rays. He was playing in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .323 with 0 homers and 11 RBIs in 23 games for Peoria.

Ashley is the most well known of the four added to the roster, as he became a favorite of manager Joe Maddon during spring training and rejoined the team during the playoffs as an emergency catcher after Dioner Navarro chose to leave the team.  He hit .255 with 7 homers and 45 RBIs in 92 games for Double-A Montgomery, and then .167 with 1 homer in 7 games for Triple-A Durham.

 Cobb was 7-5 with a 2.71 ERA and 128 strikeouts in 119 2/3 innings for Double-A Montgomery.

De La Rosa was 9-3 with a 1.97 ERA in 47 relief appearances for the Biscuits, and struck out 75 in 73 innings,

Suarez was 2-5 with a 3.89 ERA in 11 games for Class A Bowling Green.
