Ruggiano being designated for assignment

Rays OF Justin Ruggiano said he is being designated for assignment as team clears roster space for Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon. There is another move to come, with 1B/OF Leslie Anderson, C Jose Lobaton, and relievers Rob Delaney and Mike Ekstrom among the most likely. And given their need for relievers, it would seem Anderson or Lobaton is more likely.

Ruggiano, 28, was expected to compete for the backup outfield spot, but the acquisition of Sam Fuld from the Cubs, and the potential of Desmond Jennings, limited his opportunity. Ruggiano, who played for the Rays in 2007-08 and has been at Triple-A Durham the last two years is out of options, so the Rays would have had to take him off the roster by the end of the spring anyway if he didn't make the team.

By designating him for assignment, the Rays buy more time, with 10 days to either trade, release or pass him through waivers to send him back to Triple-A Durham.
