S-Rod fractures right hand punching locker at Durham, hopes to return this season

UPDATE, 7:11: Rays manager Joe Maddon said he didn't know all the details but termed it an "unfortunate" incident as Rodriguez was definitely in their plans going forward. "It was all set up and everything was there,'' he said. "It's just unfortunate this happened. Especially against lefthanded pitchers, he's a big part of what we do here. Maybe it's not as bad as I'm hearing, but then again it could be and he may end up missing the rest of the season. I'm just not sure.''

BREAKING: INF Sean Rodriguez's season is in jeopardy after he sustained a fracture in his right hand punching a locker in frustration following Sunday's game with Triple-A Durham.
"Definitely the dumbest thing I've ever done,"" Rodriguez said by phone.

Rodriguez is back in St. Petersburg to see hand specialist Dr. Doug Carlan Tuesday. Rodriguez is confident the break, which showed up on an X-rays, is not severe since he still has some movement in his hand and that he will be able to return to action soon.

"I'm hoping I'm ready in a week," Rodriguez said. "I don't think it's as bad as it seems."

After being sent down last week, Rodriguez was set to be called back up Saturday when rosters expand.

Rodriguez, who homered in the game, said he punched the locker in frustration as a postgame situation with a teammate escalated, but he would not disclose what was said or who was involved. "I"m not going to disclose that," he said.
