Season slogan: WIN
Manager Joe Maddon decided against using a motivating math equation for this season - such as the successful 9 = 8, and not quite as successful "09 > "08 - but he did settle on a slogan.
The words: What's Important Now?
The message: Stay in the moment.
The not coincidental acronym: WIN.
Maddon talks a lot during the winter with Ken Ravizza, the Rays performance consultant and sports psychologist, and said Ravizza actually came up with the idea, and Maddon liked it. A sign was put up above the entrance to the clubhouse at the Charlotte Sports Park, and they're still deciding whether to use it on T-shirts as well.
"We're always bouncing ideas off of one another,'' Maddon said. "Last year we talked about controlling the controllables. It's always about staying in the present tense and having a higher state of awareness. It was his idea. He came up with the slogan - he got it somewhere, I'm not entirely sure where. What's Important Now? Staying in the present moment, that's kind of a phrase I want to use with the guys a little bit this year.''
