Shields strong in simulated game Tuesday
RHP James Shields was very sharp in a two-inning simulated game at Tropicana Field Tuesday, making up for Monday’s postponed start.
Shields struck out four, including Evan Longoria, Johnny Damon and B.J. Upton, in a 30-pitch outing. “A nice little All-Star lineup,” Shields said. “There’s a lot of hits in that lineup.”
Shields was encouraged with how he was able to throw some quality breaking balls for strikes, partly thanks to being able to maintain his mechanics.
“I feel really good, really strong,” Shields said. “My last four outings of spring training have been exactly where I want it to be. My delivery is as good as it’s going to get. If I stay consistent with it throughout the year, I think we’re going to have some success.”
Though Monday’s rainout threw off Shields regular routine, he said he’ll be good to go for Saturday’s start against the Orioles. Joked Shields: “I’ll let (executive VP Andrew) Friedman know I can pitch on four days rest whenever he needs me.”
*RHP Adam Russell and LHP Jake McGee also threw an inning in Tuesday's simulated game, both pleased with how they felt and threw. Each will make the second of back-to-back appearances Wednesday at Tropicana Field against the Jays.
