Shoppach leaves Rays for Red Sox

Kelly Shoppach's departure from the Rays became official Tuesday morning with word he had agreed to a 1-year deal with the Red Sox.

Per ESPN's Jerry Crasnick, Shoppach will get $1.35-million from the Sox, plus incentives. Shoppach made $3-million while hitting .176 for the Rays last season, but was very good behind the plate in terms of handling pitchers and throwing out runners.

The Rays declined a $3.2-million option on Shoppach, and replaced him by signing Jose Molina for $1.5-million. There was some talk that if Shoppach remained on the market the Rays would consider bringing him back as well.

With Shoppach signed, the Sox apparently will cut ties with veteran Jason Varitek.
