Shouse gets minor-league deal with Red Sox; Rays don't get extra draft pick

13

January

There apparently was no formal announcement, but former Rays LHP Brian Shouse signed a minor-league deal with the Red Sox last week.

That's not good for the Rays - not because they'll have to face him, but because he only got a minor-league deal, the Rays won't get an extra draft pick - not even if he is added to the major-league roster later.

Shouse was a Type B free agent, and if he had signed a major-league deal the Rays would have gotten an extra compensation-round draft pick, between Rounds 1 and 2, as they did when Gregg Zaun signed with the Brewers.

It's not clear how/if Shouse would fit in with the Sox, and the folks at overthemonster.com, who first noticed the signing, aren't sure either.

And in other ex-Ray news, there is speculation based on a New York Post story that Rocco Baldelli could end up with the Yankees, who supposedly only have $2-million to spend for another outfielder. Jonny Gomes has also been mentioned as a possibility there.

And the Chicago Cubs are supposed to decide in the next week or so on whether to relocate their spring training base to Naples, or to stay in Mesa, Ariz.
