Sonnanstine signs with Cubs

RHP Andy Sonnanstine, a member of the Rays his entire pro career, agreed Monday to a one-year deal with the Cubs.

Sonnanstine, 28, was a 13-game winner in the Rays’ 2008 AL Championship season, plus two more in the postseason, but was eventually moved to the bullpen and split the 2011 season between Tampa Bay (0-2, 5.55 in 15 games) and Triple-A Durham.

The Rays let him become a free agent after the season rather than tender a contact and go through arbitration, which would have led to a raise from his $912,500 salary. The Cubs signed him to a non-guaranteed split contract, so he could end up in the minors with them.
