Spring game report: Rays at Phillies (5-4 loss)
UPDATE, 4:26: Rays lost, again, 5-4 on walkoff single in the ninth by Joel Naughton as Maddon went to the five-man infield, bringing Russ Canzler in from leftfield to play third. Said Maddon: "You have to work on it some time.'' ... The Rays have now gone eight games without a win, 0-7-1 since their spring-opening win on Feb. 26. ... Maddon was pleased with the relief work of Juan Cruz, Brandon Gomes, Jake McGee and Cesar Ramos (despite the homer he allowed).
UPDATE, 3:32: Phillies tie it in the 8th with a home run off Cory Wade by Matt Rizzotti.
UPDATE, 3:10: The Rays take a 4-3 lead in the seventh as Joe Inglett, who misplayed a fly ball early, singles, steals second and scores on Chris Carter's single. Tim Beckham followed with a single, but Ruggiano struck out to the end the inning.
UPDATE, 2:42: Rays rally for three runs in fifth to tie - Sean Rodriguez's two-run double the key hit. Casey Kotchman started the rally with a double, and the Phillies helped by messing up on a bunt play.
UPDATE, 2:18: Impressive inning of relief by Juan Cruz - two strikeouts, a just-missed full-count walk, and an infield out.
UPDATE, 2:08: Lee looks to be in pretty regular season (or post-season) form against the Rays, setting them down in order again in the fourth, including Joyce looking at strike three. It's 3-0 Phils, as Brian Schneider homered off Ramos in the bottom of the third, and some more defensive sloppiness led to another.
UPDATE, 1:46: Rays go down in order vs. Lee in third. Davis is done after two inning, lefty relief candidate Cesar Ramos is on.
UPDATE, 1:31: Ryan Howard took Davis deep to right to start the second, Phils lead 1-0.
UPDATE, 1:29: A Felipe Lopez infield single is all Rays get off Lee in the second. Wade Davis got through the first inning quickly for Rays.
UPDATE, 1:26: Former Rays manager Lou Piniella is here, scouting the Rays, and the Phillies, in his new role as a special assistant for the Giants. Said he is enjoying being involved in the game, his mother is hanging on in her battle with health problems, and he is glad to see the Rays continue to do well. He was amused when the story was relayed to him about former Ray Carl Crawford saying Lou was the one who told him he wasn't cut out to be a leadoff hitter.
UPDATE, 1:12: Rays didn't get much Lee in the first, but Matt Joyce did single off him, which is a pretty good example of left on left hitting.
UPDATE, 11:28: RHP Jeremy Hellickson (right hamstring strain) threw a 10-minute, 34-pitch session of batting practice this morning in Port Charlotte and felt great, the Rays said, with plans for another session on Tuesday and his first exhibition game appearance on March 11. ... The rest of the injury report was unchanged from yesterday - Ben Zobrist (right ankle) and Elliot Johnson (left quad) expected back Tuesday, OF Sam Fuld (elbow) Tuesday or Wednesday, SS Reid Brignac (groin tightness) by the end of the week.
DEVELOPING: The Rays are going to play the Phillies today in Clearwater, but only a few of players projected to be on their big-league team are on the trip - Sean Rodriguez, Matt Joyce, Kelly Shoppach and potentially Casey Kotchman. Wade Davis is starting, and several legit relief candidates are slated for action. The Phillies are playing most of their main guys, and will have that Cliff Lee guy on the mound.
And for the Phillies:
