Spring game report: Rays at Pirates (5-4 loss)

UPDATE, 4:20: The Rays lost 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth when minor-league 3B Daniel Mayora made a throwing error to allow the winning run to score. The Pirates win the spring series 4-3.

UPDATE, 3:40: After Pirates took the lead in the 6th, Rays just tied it in top of ninth by Jaso, 4-4.

UPDATE, 2:28: Cabral gives up a homer to Jose Tabata to make it 3-2.

UPDATE, 2:26: Price is done after four innings - as expected - allowing 1 run on 5 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts. Rule 5 pick Cesar Cabral is in now.

UPDATE, 2:18: Reid Brignac delivers an RBI single to right off lefty Paul Maholm to make it 3-1 Rays in the fifth.

UPDATE, 2:11: Ben Zobrist hits a long home run righthanded, on an 0-2 pitch, to give the Rays a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

UPDATE, 2:03: Still 1-1 as Pirates hit in the bottom of the fourth.

UPDATE, 1:50: Pirates tied it in the third as Neil Walker triples off the centerfield wall and scores on a ground out.

UPDATE, 1:37: Price gets in and out of trouble again in the second, still 1-0 Rays through two.

UPDATE, 1:27: Rays take a 1-0 lead when Kelly Shoppach hits his fourth homer of the spring leading off the second. Price gave up two hits in the first, but the defense bailed him out, Longoria starting a 5-4-3 double play and Brignac making a diving play.

UPDATE, 12:50: Maddon said that Monday's batting order is pretty much what he has settled on for Friday's opener, against Baltimore RHP Jeremy Guthrie. The order looks like this, though Maddon said he has yet to decide on whether to flip Jaso and Brignac, and actually is leaning toward doing so:
D. Johnson

Maddon also said he has decided on B.J. Upton as the leadoff hitter against lefties, and that the Nos. 2-3-4 would stay the same, though he was still working in the bottom portion, with the possibility that C Kelly Shoppach could be as high as fifth.

UPDATE, 11:37: Pirates lineup:
Tabata lf
Walker 2b
McCutchen cf
Overbay 1b
Diaz rf
Alvarez 3b
Doumit c
Cedeno ss
Maholm lhp

UPDATE, 9:28: A little bit of news from the minor-league side as the Rays will have an impressive 1-2 pitching punch at Double-A Montgomery, LHP Matt Moore and RHP Chris Archer.

DEVELOPING: The Rays and Pirates are playing Game 7 of their spring training series with the Pirates today in Bradenton, having split the first six.

David Price will be on the mound, though probably only for 3-4 innings, and most of the regulars are in the lineup, except for Manny Ramirez.

Here is the lineup posted in the clubhouse this morning:
Upton cf
Damon lf
Longoria 3b
Shoppach c
Zobrist rf
Rodriguez 2b
D. Johnson 1b
E. Johnson dh
Brignac ss
Price p

Manager Joe Maddon plans to use what looks like his opening day lineup on Monday night in Tampa and play the regulars for most of the game, then give many of them Tuesday off, and play them again in Wednesday's exhibition finale at Tropicana Field. The Rays will not work out on Thursday - though the Orioles will - and then they open the season on Friday night.
