Spring game report: Rays at Red Sox (1-1 tie)
UPDATE, 4:26: The game ended in a 1-1 tie as the Red Sox had to leave to fly to Houston for an exhibition so there was not extra inning.
UPDATE, 2:15: The Rays took a 1-0 lead when Elliot Johnson singled in Sean Rodriguez in the top of the fourth, but the Red Sox just tied it when Adrian Gonzalez went deep off Wade Davis.
UPDATE, 1:56: It's 0-0 through 3 innings here.
UPDATE, 1:38: There have been a couple of long drives off Davis but no score thus far in the second.
UPDATE, 1:10: The Rays made a minor trade, acquiring OF John Shelby III from the White Sox for cash with expectations he will join Double-A Montgomery. ... Before the game, Carl Crawford was presented his 2010 BBWAA Rays MVP and Champion awards. ... Busy late morning here as the Sox had a ceremony for what is supposed to be the last game at City of Palms Park before they move into a new facility on the other side of Fort Myers.
UPDATE, 10:01: The leftfielder will be Dustin Biell, who also played at Class A Bowling Green last year.
UPDATE, 9:54: Now there's word that Morrison is scratched from the linuep and will be replaced by another minor-leaguer. The Rays aren't leaving Port Charlotte until 10:30 so they aren't planning much of a pre-game workout. With several of the coaches staying at the Trop, today will provide a rare opportunity to see Bobby Ramos in the third-base coaches box.
DEVELOPING: The Rays will use a bit of a patchwork lineup for their penultimate game of the spring today in Fort Myers against the Red Sox.
Only four players expected to be in Friday's opening lineup are scheduled to play today - C John Jaso, Dan Johnson (who will DH today), RF Matt Joyce, and SS Reid Brignac. And two players from minor-league camp are starting, INF J.J. Furmaniak (who has somg big-league time) and OF Ty Morrison (who played at Class A last year). No. 3 starter Wade Davis will be on the hill, and big-league relievers Joel PEralta, Juan Cruz and Cesar Ramos are scheduled to pitch.
There will also be a crew working out at the Trop today, including most of the big-name position players - Manny Ramirez, Evan Longoria, Johnny Damon and B.J. Upton. James Shields, rained out of his Monday start in Tampa, will pitch a simulated game.
