Spring game report: Rays vs. Phillies (4-1 win)

UPDATE, 4:11: The Rays held on for a 4-1 victory, making it 11 wins in their last 16 games and evening their record at 12-12-1. Both Shields and Maddon were pleased with his effort. Word from the Phillies was that Oswalt's x-rays were negative and he seemed fine, but obviously will be watched closely and re-examined in a few days.

UPDATE, 2:31: The report from the Phillies is that Oswalt has a contusion behind his right ear and is being taken for x-rays. They said he did not lose consciousness and was not dizzy at all.

UPDATE, 2:23:  Rays go down fairly quickly in the fifth, and it's still 3-0.

UPDATE, 2:16: Shields has been impressive, with another 7-pitch inning. Through five shutout innings, he has allowed two hits and thrown 57 pitches.

UPDATE, 2:14: There's no radio broadcast today, so Andy Freed joined us in the main press box for the game.

UPDATE, 2:09: Upton singles hard to score Ramirez, making it 3-0.

UPDATE, 2:07: David Herndon took over for Oswalt; no word yet from their clubhouse.

UPDATE, 2:02: Quite a scare for the Phillies as Oswalt goes down after being hit on the right shoulder by a Manny line drive on the top of the right shoulder or neck area. He walked off on his own and is headed to the clubhouse.

UPDATE, 1:59: Evan Longoria drives an Oswalt pitch over the left-centerfield fence, expanding Rays lead to 2-0. Shields rebounded from his 20-pitch third inning to have a seven-pitch fourth (with six strikes).

UPDATE, 1:44:
Shields got in a bit of trouble in the third, with two on, but got Castillo on a liner to second to end the inning. Rays lead 1-0 coming to bat in the third.

UPDATE, 1:42: RHP James Shields got the Rays off to a good start, zipping through the first inning on 12 pitches. The Rays took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Damon singled, then with two outs Manny laced a ball down the rightfield line to bring him in. Then Manny went hard to second and slid in head first for a double.
