Spring game report: Rays vs. Twins (6-1 loss)
UPDATE, 4:17: Rays lose 6-1, drop to 1-6-1 for the spring, having not won in a week, since last Saturday's opener. Maddon not concerned, but not pleased noting some sloppy play and mistakes.
UPDATE, 3:03: It's now 6-1 Twins. Sonnanstine said he was working on some mechanical ajustments as a result of his rough first outing and felt very uncomfortable on the mound, but feels it will pay off for him when he gets it right.
UPDATE, 1:51: Make that 5-0, as Chris Parmelee just went deep off lefty relief candidate R.J. Swindle.
UPDATE, 1:49: Sonnanstine gives up two more in the second, though it wasn't all his fault - a bad hop grounder off SS Ray Olmedo's glove started the rally and a fly ball LF Johnny Damon lost in the sun scored one of the runs. Rays down 4-0.
UPDATE, 1:19: Sonnanstine starts rough again for Rays, allowing two runs on a leadoff walk and two hits. On the other hand, none were home runs, as he allowed five to the first 11 batters in his last outing.
UPDATE, 10:46: Though the Rays don't consider Brignac's injury to be serious, manager Joe Maddon said it could be a week before he gets back on the field for a game. Also, Ben Zobrist (right ankle) and Elliiot Johnson (left quad) aren't due back until Tuesday and OF Sam Fuld (elbow) on Wednesday.
UPDATE, 9:22: Brignac was scratched due to "groin tightness,' the team said, and for precautionary reasons.
UPDATE, 8:50: The Twins aren't exactly bringing their A lineup - Jason Kubel is the biggest name in their lineup, though the longest is Brian Dinkelman, the rigthfielder.
Here is the full order:
UPDATE, 8:35: Among all the injuries in Rays camp, add this off one: Bullpen coach Bobby Ramos strained his rib cage when sneezing on Thursday and had to go for x-rays.
UPDATE, 8:30: Another lineup change today as SS Reid Brignac was scratched, and Ray Olmedo will take his place. No word yet on why Brignac is out.
Here is the new lineup:
D. Johnson 1b
DEVELOPING: The Rays are hosting the Twins today - after their annual meeting with players union officials - and will run out most of their starting lineup. Ben Zobrist, sidelined Friday by a tender right ankle, is not playing however. Andy Sonnanstine will be on the mound.
