Spring game report: Rays vs. Yanks (cancelled)

28

March

Update 5:05 p.m. With tonight's game cancelled, RHP James Shields will throw two innings in a simulated game Tuesday at Tropicana Field, where several Rays will be working out.

RHP Adam Russell and LHP Jake McGee, who were scheduled to throw the second of back-to-back games tonight, will also pitch.

Maddon said calling the game was the right decision, with his only disappointment that tonight was supposed to be a game where the regulars played late into the game. Maddon said all that means is the regulars, like Longoria, etc, will play deeper into Wednesday's spring exhibition finale at the Trop.

Maddon said those who were scheduled to play tommorrow in Fort Myers still will.

Update 5:00 Tonight's Rays-Yankees game has been cancelled due to rain.

Update 4:27 pm. The tarp is on the field and it's been raining pretty steadily at Steinbrenner Field. There's supposedly a "window" around 7 p.m. to play but we'll see.

Developing: Only a handful of Rays are in Port Charlotte today as many moved back up to the Tampa Bay area, with a game against the Yankees tonight in Tampa and a workout at the Trop on Tuesday for most of the big names as they won't make the trip to Fort Myers.

The Rays will run out tonight what is very close to their opening day lineup, only with Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez trading jobs today and the possibility of Reid Brignac and John Jaso flip-flopping in the order. No. 2 starter James Shields will be on the mound, for what should be about a four-inning stint

Here is the lineup:
Zobrist 2b
Damon dh
Longoria 3b
Ramirez lf
D. Johnson 1b
Upton cf
Joyce rf
Jaso c
Brignac ss
Shields p

The squad going to Fort Myers on Tuesday includes Jaso, Sam Fuld, Sean Rodriguez, Brignac, Joyce and Elliot Johnson, who will play first base. Wade Davis will pitch, and relievers Cesar Ramos, Juan Cruz and Joel Peralta are scheduled for work.
