For starters, Rays at Orioles, needing an edge
UPDATE, 5:58: The O's made it official that LHP Wei-Yin Chen will start Thursday.
UPDATE, 5:55: Jennings (stiff back) said he felt good enough to play but the Rays wanted him to go through a full workout today - which he did with no issues - and expect him to play Thursday. ... LHP David Price is officially set to start Friday. ... INF Sean Rodriguez (broken hand) is also set to be activated on Saturday on a limited basis ... Principal owner Stuart Sternberg is here and said he is pleased the team is playing meaningful games in mid-September.
UPDATE, 3:58: LF Desmond Jennings is not in the Rays lineup tonight, but INF Ryan Roberts is. Also, Evan Longoria is back at 3B.
BREAKING: After an uninspired and unsuccessful effort last night, the Rays will try again tonight against the Orioles, needing a win to maintain a chance to win the series and avoid losing any more ground in the AL East and/or wildcard race.
Manager Joe Maddon acknowledged after the game that they didn't play with the same edge they had during their homestand.
"The fact that you played with such intensity the last week at home, a lot of high-pressure games, did really well, take a day off, come up here — maybe you lose a little bit of that edge,'' Maddon said.
"I want to believe we're not that group. I want to believe we're going to come out with the correct edge. We need to do that (tonight). These guys, like I said, are not going away. They're playing with a lot of conviction, and we have to match it."
Evan Longoria is expected to be at third base tonight, after an extra day at DH. Desmond Jennings is hoping to return after missing three games with a stiff lower back, and was out on the field simulating base-stealing for a photo shoot this afternoon so he must be feeling better. INF Ryan Roberts left Tuesday's game with a left forearm strain and was hopeful of playing tonight but that seems unlikely.
Lineups when available.
