For starters, Rays at Rangers, in more heat
UPDATE, 7:11: Maddon said Guyer will get a chance to play, as not only do the Rays want to get a look at him, but they feel he can help them, and he seems likely to start Thursday vs. lefty C.J. Wilson. Ruggiano will be on the bench. Maddon also said they are likely to add another player or two when they get home for the weekend, which seems to confirm they will wait a few days for C Jose Lobaton to advance in his rehab of a left knee sprain. Lobaton caught five innings on Tuesday and is to DH tonight to Class A Charlotte. It sounds like when he gets here, he too will get a chance to play, as neither John Jaso nor Kelly Shoppach have hit much. A reliever is also likely to be added.
The Rangers are expected to activate 3b Adrian Beltre Thursday, in addition to adding LHP Mike Gonzalez and C Matt Treanor. Tonight's lineup:
UPDATE, 5:10: Rays lineup: Jennings lf, Damon dh, Longoria 3b, Zobrist 2b, Kotchman 1b, Upton cf, Joyce rf, Jaso c, Rodriguez ss, Shields p
DEVELOPING: The Rays are skipping pre-game work outside today as the prep for tonight's game against the Rangers, seeking to snap a two-game skid.
RHP James Shields, who leads the majors with 10 complete games, will be on the mound for the Rays, taking on Texas' Alexi Ogando. Temperatures are once again expected to be around or above 100 degrees.
The Rays were shutout on Tuesday for the 13th time this season - and 12th in their last 80 games - and afterward manager Joe Maddon challenged them do dig deeper and find a way to win close, well-pitched games.
With now trades - coming or going - expected before postseason rosters are set today, the Rays announced plans to add two players on Thursday when rosters expand: OF Brandon Guyer is being called up from Triple-A, and OF Justin Ruggiano will be activated off the DL.
John Jaso is expected to be behind the plate tonight for the Rays.
