For starters, Rays at Red Sox

8

March

FINAL: Red Sox 8, Rays 2.

UPDATE, 3:38: Wade Davis said his problems were self-inflicted, the result of throwing too many pitches up and over the middle of the plate. "It was not a bad day,'' he said. "Obviously the numbers weren't awesome and it wasn't a blast out there, but I got some things done today I had to get accomplished. Unfortunately some balls left the park.'' The Sox lead 8-1 in the eighth.

UPDATE, 3:05: The Rays got on the board with a single by Fernando Perez and a double by Adam Kennedy off Junichi Tazawa.

UPDATE, 3:01: Still 7-0 Red Sox in the top of the sixth. The Rays rapped a pair of hits off Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon in the fourth but didn't get anything out of it.

UPDATE, 2:07: Wade Davis couldn't make it through the third inning, allowing eight hits. Calvin Medlock took over, and promptly gave up two more to make it 7-0 Sox. Davis' line - 2 2/3 IP, 8 hits, 6 earned runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts.

UPDATE, 1:48: The Red Sox got off to a quick start against Wade Davis, whose impressive spring is taking a bit of a downturn. They got a run in the first, when Rocco Baldelli scored from second on a Lars Anderson single. Then they got two more in the second, as ex-Ray Nick Green hit a big home run and another ex-Ray Julio Lugo doubled in Ivan Ochoa. They had a chance for another, but Ray Sadler threw out Lugo at the plate for the third out. After two innings, 3-0 Sox.

UPDATE, 12:40: The news on OF Matt Joyce was relatively good, as the Rays believe he has tendinitis in his lower right leg and plan to have him get back on the field this week wearing a brace or air cast.

Otherwise, not much news this morning. The Rays couldn't hit on the main field here at City of Palms Park because the sprinklers were left on too long and the field was wet. OF/DH Pat Burrell is expected back in Port Charlotte and to be in the lineup Monday after taking four days to attend his sister's wedding in San Francisco.

Ex-Ray Rocco Baldelli is in the Boston lineup, and said things are going well for him.

The Rays are playing the second half of their home and home weekend with the Red Sox in Fort Myers. As they get ready to leave Port Charlotte, here is the lineup, and an update on RHP Grant Balfour:

Balfour's right arm was definitely bruised in several places, swollen, and, he said, "a little tight," after being hit by a line drive on Saturday. He didn't know yet if, and how long, it would set him back. "The rugby boys back home would be proud of me,'' the Australian said.

Also, an update on the condition of OF Matt Joyce, who has been sidelined with a right leg injury, is expected today.
