For starters, Rays at Royals without Upton

UPDATE, 1:25: Upton said he was told on Saturday he wouldn't play today. "It's just a day off,'' he said. "I hope that's what it is.'' Upton reiterated that he would prefer to not be traded, but said with all the rumores (and he mentioned Philadelphia in addition to San Francisco, Cleveland and Washington), said "it's become a comedy to me.'' He said he had no preference where to go if he was traded. ... Maddon said he had decided during the last homestand to give Upton today off, and that "he"ll play the rest of the games" on the road trip that continues in Oakland and Seattle. ... And as for putting Desmond Jennings in CF when he is supposedly going to play left every day, Maddon said he was the better choice than Sam Fuld today.

DEVELOPING: The Rays are playing to avoid a sweep in Kansas City today, and CF B.J. Upton - the subject of numerous trade rumors - is not in the lineup.

Manager Joe Maddon had been talking of giving Upton a day off, so we'll assume for now that's all it is. For now. Upton is here however.

Desmond Jennings will be in center today.

Rays lineup:
Jennings cf,
Damon dh,
Zobrist 2b,
Longoria 3b,
Joyce rf,
Kotchman 1b,
Chirinos c,
Fuld lf,
Rodriguez ss,
Cobb p
